Along for the journey with BAE Systems

Tools used
- Multi-channel surveys
- Online and offline data collection
- Tailored data reports
- Hierarchy management
When security and aerospace company BAE Systems wanted to better understand their new starters’ experiences, we were on hand to help.
The challenge
Getting to know their new people better
BAE Systems needs to hire, train and keep the best possible people – after all, the firm’s workforce deals with highly sensitive information every single day. To better understand their new hires, they wanted to use engagement surveys that were flexible and easy to scale.
But they needed a solution that could handle both online and offline feedback from their geographically diverse workforce. Our software was at the ready.
“Having the ability to measure the before and after, to measure the perceived impact of the new hire from the manager’s point-of-view, the onboarding experience from the new hire’s point-of-view provides invaluable data that helps us make important decisions and take appropriate action.”
Mike Kessler
Chief Learning Officer, BAE Systems

Our solution
Exploring new starters’ experiences with surveys
Using our multi-channel software solution, BAE Systems put in place a series of surveys. These included an onboarding survey for new starters, a new hire survey 30 days after they started, and a 180-day survey to understand how employees are getting on over their first six months.
A year after hiring, they also sent out a ‘quality of hire’ survey to the employee’s manager to get their perspective on the new team member’s progress.
The results
Helping new hires – and established employees
All the survey results proved valuable, but it was the 180-day survey that brought a huge insight: the company learned that in too many cases, new hires needed more from their managers.
This changed the way the firm looked at who should become managers and how they train them. The data also helped BAE make their people-management training more hands-on and supportive – meaning the program is benefiting established employees as well as new starters.
